  Biology has become an information science and is beginning to move like the early days of desktop computing. DIY biology should advance faster than early hobby computing as it is riding the exponential growth of computing, high speed internet communications, open source software and free online education. As such, this can be a great place for everyone with an interest or background in computers and the life sciences.

Current favorite systems to model are the nano robots in the 1994 sci fi movie "Deep Red". There, fictional nano robots circulate in the blood stream and repair any defect instantly. For example, in the movie;  bullets pass through a person and the bots repair the damage behind the bullet even before it exits the other side. Thats instantly! If you drown, the nano medicine bots put your cells into stasis until oxygen can be found to revive you, and genetic defects are easily repaired. It is a very dynamic and interesting field once you start to explore, monitor and maybe even participate.
