DIY nano robotics

By: 5 elad

Today I want to explore software platforms most applicable to the design and eventual construction of nano robots (of course from a DIY anti aging hobby project point of view).

A search of potential platforms to use in design and eventual construction of medical nano bots was narrowed to caDNAno, geWorkbench, TinkerCell and NanoEngineer-1.

After a quick review of each I think the most appropriate package for a more in depth study and play project will be NanoEngineer-1. It seems to be the most user friendly with great tutorials and it's FREE:) It is probably the most relevant since it is a CAD/CAM molecular modeling package and is now moving into DNA origami with tools for visualizing, modeling, and manipulating DNA structures. I believe DNA origami will provide the atomically precise frameworks to build medical nanobots on.

Long term potential of this platform seems probable as it is open source and has a good size active user base and support. It has been around several years so the bad bugs should be gone by now.

So far the download and install have been quick and painless, and the front end looks like big fun!
To download the software or just explore further, Nanorex has a great website at http://www.nanoengineer-1.net/

Some great tutorials and most popular pages are here: http://www.nanoengineer-1.net/mediawiki/index.php?title=Special:Whatlinkshere&target=Tutorials

As an extra here is a fun short video depicting medical nanobots

And here is a little more educational overview from KQED called Nanotechnology Takes Off.
